AI adoption is putting software engineering practices to the test

Artificial intelligence can accelerate code generation, but faster development does not necessarily mean more reliable software. As organizations integrate AI into engineering workflows, the challenge is becoming how to translate those productivity gains into predictable delivery, software stability and measurable business outcomes.

The 2025 DORA report on AI-assisted software development, based on responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals, found that AI tends to amplify an organization’s existing strengths and weaknesses. The findings highlight why the impact of AI depends not only on the technology itself, but also on the processes, systems and teams responsible for putting it to work.

The report found that a 25% increase in AI adoption was associated with a 1.5% decrease in delivery throughput and a 7.2% decrease in delivery stability. These findings describe statistical associations rather than proving that AI directly caused the declines, but they illustrate the complexity of measuring its impact across the software development lifecycle.

Against this backdrop, Academic HealthPlans (AHP) is partnering with Gorilla Logic on a multi-year technology transformation designed to strengthen its engineering capabilities and introduce a more measurable approach to AI-enabled software development.

Modernizing engineering for student health services

AHP, part of the Brown & Brown Team, provides student health and wellness consulting and plan administration for colleges and universities across the United States. The company has spent nearly three decades serving higher education institutions and is investing in its technology, data and engineering infrastructure to address increasingly complex institutional needs.

The partnership will focus on modernizing AHP’s core technology platform, strengthening software delivery and developing a more scalable approach to product development and customer service.

“AI creates an opportunity to fundamentally improve how we operate and how we serve our clients, but the goal is bigger than simply introducing new technology,” said Terry Lyons, CEO of Academic HealthPlans.

The initial phase included an AI-enabled assessment of AHP’s existing technology and engineering environment. The process combined AI-assisted analysis with hands-on engineering expertise to identify areas where modernization could have the greatest impact.

The broader initiative will introduce governed AI-enabled engineering workflows, shared technical knowledge and a framework for tracking development velocity, reliability and predictability.

Gorilla Logic will also apply its Construct™ engineering system, which combines reusable expertise, reference architectures, accelerators and established delivery practices.

“AI can increase the speed of software development, but enterprise-grade technology still requires governance, sound engineering practices and experienced judgment,” said Drew Naukam, CEO of Gorilla Logic.

From faster development to measurable outcomes

The partnership aims to give engineering teams greater autonomy, improve delivery predictability and make innovation easier to scale across AHP. It is also expected to support the company’s use of data and AI to generate deeper insights for the educational institutions it serves.

The companies have not disclosed financial terms, specific productivity targets or projected cost savings. As a result, the partnership’s impact will need to be assessed through the operational metrics introduced as the program develops.

“Technology is increasingly central to how we help institutions navigate the complexity of student health,” Lyons said. “This partnership is an investment in where that experience goes next.”

Founded in 1998, AHP provides customized student health benefit programs and administrative services. Gorilla Logic provides AI-native product and platform engineering, AI agents, workflow automation, AI-enabled software delivery and enterprise integration services.
