RTÉ Player app for iPhone and iPad arrives in time for Christmas

Home screen of the RTÉ Player app on the iPad

As promised by RTÉ’s director of platform development Aisling McCabe at October’s Dublin Web Summit, the RTÉ Player app for the iPhone and iPad has been released in time for Christmas. The universal iOS app made its way through Apple’s App Store approval process last weekend, and was made available for free download as of this morning.

The app brings all that you’d expect from the desktop version of the RTÉ Player to popular Apple mobile devices (excluding the iPhone 3, 3G and 2nd generation iPod Touch). Users can stream programmes for up to 21 days after their initial broadcast using WiFi or over a 3G network, and watch live RTÉ One, RTÉ Two and RTÉ News Now channels.

Programmes are categorised as you’d expect, with additional Most Popular and Latest sections. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, video content quality will automatically be adapted to suit using “adaptive bitrate streaming”.

Favourite programmes for later viewing or share with friends

Various share buttons allow users to share what programmes they’re currently viewing with friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter, with a simple email share option included also. Users can also add programmes to Favourites and resume content viewing where they left off.

The RTÉ Player app supports AirPlay so Apple TV users can stream content to a big screen wirelessly from their iPhone or iPad.

Happy viewing.
