500px takes on Flickr and Instagram with ‘Awesome’ offer

In the wake of Instagram’s terms of service fallout and Flickr’s three free months offer of Flickr Pro, 500px has followed suit with a great offer of its own.

For Boxing Day (or St. Stephen’s Day) only, 500px is offering 50% off its Awesome account upgrade at $24.95 for the first year. Awesome is 500px’s top-tier package for pro photographers that usually costs $49.95 per year.

At $24.95, 500px has matched Flickr’s one-year membership price of Flickr Pro.

With an Awesome account 500px users can;

  • upload unlimited photos
  • create unlimited photo sets
  • access advanced statistics
  • access to Google Analytics
  • customise their 500px portfolio
  • receive a 500px subdomain, like you.500px.com
  • connect their personal domain to 500px portfolio
  • sell photos in the Market (as all account holders can)

Flickr’s ‘Holiday Gift’, announced at the end of last week, offers three months free of unlimited uploads, the ability to download original, high-resolution uploads on-demand, and the ability to upload and play unlimited Flickr videos.

Both offers from 500px and Flickr come after Instagram earlier this month made changes to its terms of service that gave it the rights to use member photos in advertising. The Instagram community reacted extremely negatively, with many leaving the service for alternatives like 500px and Flickr. Instagram, a few days later, was eventually forced to revert to its original terms.

Last month, 500px upgraded its iOS app, already a hugely popular iPad app, to support iPhone and iPod Touch. In November also, 500px gained a foothold in Europe by acquiring French startup Pulpfingers.
