Chinese to overtake English as the dominant language of the internet

Chinese will overtake English as the dominate language on the internet in the next five years, according to data collated by TNW.

TNW says that there are over 400m Chinese language internet users, a number approaching the 530m English language internet users. Along with this already large number Chinese has also seen a 1,277% increase in online use in the past decade.

Other language have seen rapid growth in the same period, use of Arabic increased by 2,500% (totalling 65m internet users) and Russian also saw a growth of 1,825% (totalling 58m users).

English saw one of the smallest growth rates of only 281%.

  • English is still the most powerful language on the internet. It covers more than 460 million Internet users all around the world with an average GDP per capita of $38,632. But Mother tongue Chinese Internet users are in fact growing in number and they make up a significant slice of the e-market..
